Patricia Anne Blackwood, 90, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 11, in her own home in Boston, with one of her children by her side. She was born on April 4, 1933, and was the beloved daughter of Milton and Anna (Bruyns) Blackwood. She enjoyed a happy childhood growing up in Wellesley Hills, MA, with summers spent on the ocean in Scituate. While a student at Colby-Sawyer College, she met Ward Gypson from Dartmouth College. She was class President of her graduating class an after completing her degree in chemistry, worked in a medical laboratory, married and started a family. She evolved into a tireless Navy wife, adept at packing and moving every few years with kids and cats, and making new friends wherever she went: New York, Pennsylvania, California, Virginia, and Maryland. While still in Maryland, she decided to research family stories of Maryland ancestors in colonial times, and she eventually joined the DAR. She loved animals, music, and reading, and passed all these passions on to her children. Civilian life in New York was a constant whirl of school, scouts, sports and theater productions, as her three children made their way through school. Later years meant frequent visits to her beloved grandchildren. Crew races and fabulous dinners in Massachusetts, country fairs in Connecticut, and Halloween fun in Virginia. During her final illness, Patricia was grateful for the time spent with her caregiver Belinda.
Patricia leaves behind three beloved children: Laurie Gypson, Brenda Rich (Ben), and Ward Gypson (Kate); seven cherished grandchildren: Zachary Rich (Hailey), Cyrus Rich (Jenya), Erin Walsh Valenzuela (Joel), Shannon Walsh (David), Analiese Gypson, Maddie Gypson, and John Gypson; and a tiny great-grandson, Finnley Rich. Patricia dearly loved the many cats and dogs in her life and would do anything she could to make her family happy.
A celebration of Patricia’s life will be held at a yet to be determined date. In lieu of flowers, friends and family may consider making a donation to: Best Friends Animal Society https://bestfriends.org/donate/memory Or by phone 435-919-3835.
