Barbara Horwitz Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Barbara Ann Horwitz announces her death. Barbara died on September 9, 2018 in a hospice facility in Lincoln, Massachusetts. The cause of her death was breast cancer.

Barbara and her husband, Jerry Banks lived in Decatur, Georgia for more than 30 years. Barbara grew up in West Orange, New Jersey.  She was born on March 10, 1954 a daughter of the late Lila and Bernard Horwitz. After graduating from Wellesley College in 1976, Barbara spent her career fund raising for various nonprofit organizations including Georgia Public Television, the Nature Conservancy, and the Southern Center for Human Rights. Barbara is survived by her husband, Jerry Banks, her sister Nancy Horwitz, of Newton, Massachusetts and her brother James Horwitz and sister-in-law Sandy Allison of Woodbridge Connecticut. She is also survived by niece Allie Horwitz and nephews Evan and Benjamin Horwitz who have been inspired by her passion and commitment to social justice. Her 17-year-old cat, Gatto will miss Barbara dearly.

Barbara was a lifelong progressive, feminist and outspoken advocate for the causes in which she believed. She relished good debate and never shied away from expressing her opinions. She loved art, music, and theater. She took great pleasure in visiting crafts festivals where she was always able to find the perfect gift. She was an accomplished runner, cyclist, hiker and yogi. After her diagnosis she was active in the cancer survivor community and was especially interested in holistic wellness and healing. She had boundless energy. Barbara was an indefatigable traveler who pursued the outdoors, culture, fabulous food, craft beer and wine. She had a fondness for Cape Sand Blas, Florida, Martha’s Vineyard, and Vermont.

Her funeral will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to:

The American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia, P.O. Box 77208, Atlanta, GA 30357

Lifeline Animal Project, P.O. Box 15466, Atlanta, GA 30333

Care Dimensions Hospice, 75 Sylvan Street, B-102, Danvers, MA 01923
