Adriana Francisca Maria (Mutsaars) O’Sullivan of Sharon and Framingham, Mass. passed away on October 18, 2024 at the age of 76. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Robert O’Sullivan; her daughter Sandra O’Sullivan Campanella, son-in-law Chris and grandchildren Isabella, Nicholas, and Sophia; her daughter Dr. Robin O’Sullivan and partner John; her brother Rein Mutsaars, sister-in-law Marian, and family; her sister Ellie van Roosmalen, brother-in-law Henk, and family; and her sister Sylvie Schepman, brother-in-law Frans, and family.
Adriana was born in Schijndel, The Netherlands. She graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and Design in s’Hertogenbosch, specializing in ceramic sculpture. Her works were purchased by the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Boymans Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, and by many art collectors. She spent a year studying ceramics at the Istituto Statale d’Arte Della Ceramica in Faenza, Italy. Upon returning to The Netherlands, she met Robert, who was stationed there as a member of the U.S. Air Force. She was swept off her feet and moved to the U.S. after marrying him in 1974.
After living for a few years in Edwards, Calif. and Waterford, Conn., they lived in Sharon, Mass. for more than 35 years and raised their two girls there. Adriana was a devoted mother, staying home with Sandra and Robin and always encouraging them to try their best in whatever they did.
Adriana was an active member of the Sharon Garden Club for many years and served as president from 2006 to 2008. She worked on civic beautification projects, creating new gardens all around Sharon. She designed the gardens in the center of town, community center, public library, fire station, town hall, railroad station, Lake Massapoag and Our Lady of Sorrows Church.
Adriana pursued a degree in the Radcliffe Seminars for Landscape Design and graduated under Harvard in 2006. She was active in the Garden Club Federation of Mass., where she served multiple posts, including director of horticulture, chairman of gardening study school, chairman of Gardening Consultants Council, chairman of Landscape Design Council of Mass., and South Shore district director.
Adriana also consulted and designed private gardens. She was popular on the garden club lecture circuit throughout New England and New York, teaching on topics like low-maintenance, drought tolerant plants, and how to create beauty with texture and foliage color. In recent years, she served on the board of The Polo Club in Narragansett, Rhode Island and as board volunteer at Montage in Framingham, Mass., designing and installing the community and private gardens of residents.
She enjoyed traveling with Robert to see family and visit gardens throughout Europe and the U.S. She also loved all the precious time she got to spend with her three grandchildren, watching them grow, learn and experience the wonders of the natural world.
She passed away after a two-year battle with cancer. She had a wonderful life that she lived to the fullest, making it her mission to make the world more beautiful through art and design. Her talent and enthusiasm inspired others to do the same. She was always ready to weed gardens, and we’re sure that’s her first order of business in heaven.
A visitation in Adriana’s honor will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2 from 10 am-12 pm at 28 Cross St., Dover, Mass. A separate private service will be held for family. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made in her honor to Native Plant Trust: https://46858.blackbaudhosting.com/46858/Annual-Fund.
