We are deeply sorry for your loss - the staff at Lehman, Reen, McNamara Funeral Home
Arthur Levasseur passed away on June 9, 2022 of lung cancer at the age of 87. He was born in New Bedford, MA to parents of French-Canadian descent. Arthur was predeceased by his three siblings and his first child, George and is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jeanne Levasseur; their daughter Jacqueline McGarry and her husband, Stephen McGarry; their son David Levasseur; their son Gerald Levasseur and his wife Vilma Levasseur; and six grandchildren.
Arthur attended catholic secondary school in New Bedford and served two years in active service during the Korean War. After becoming employed as a technician at MIT Lincoln Laboratory (Lincoln, MA), he completed an associate’s degree in engineering at Lowell Technological Institute (now Lowell University’s Francis College of Engineering). During his 36-year career at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Arthur made key contributions to the design of US defense satellite communication systems. His research projects brought him to various remote locations ranging from Arctic tundra to the Mariana Trench. Arthur retired as an Associate Staff member of MIT Lincoln Laboratory, having achieved design innovations on par with those of his PhD-trained colleagues.
Arthur’s native intelligence and passion for learning were driving forces in his life, which was remarkable for its creative achievements. Outside of his engineering career, he developed expertise in landscaping, watercolor painting, mechanics, and construction. Arthur studied watercolor painting with various artists in the Boston Metro region and became affiliated with ArtSpace Maynard. He enjoyed sailing, canoeing, fishing, skiing, hiking, music, and cuisine. During retirement Arthur and Jeanne explored many North American and Caribbean destinations with their family, former colleagues, and community friends.
Arthur also loved to learn through his friendships. He greatly enjoyed conversing with friends over coffee on ranging topics and adventuring to new destinations with them. For 9 years, Arthur served as treasurer for Maynard’s senior club, working to create an active program of travel and social events for his community of friends.
A Catholic mass in remembrance of Arthur will be held at Ascension Parish’s St. Bridget’s Church in Maynard (MA) on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at 10AM. At a later date, a committal service will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery (New Bedford), a mile from his childhood home and the resting place of many of the U.S. side of his (and his wife’s) ancestry.
