Catherine “Cathy” (Nee Beaumier) Grinold after a period of declining health, joined her late husband, John P. Grinold (Jack) entering into eternal life on June 10, 2024. Cathy was a long time Brighton resident. She was born in the province of Quebec, Canada to Fortunate and Marianne Beaumier, one of eight children. Cathy was predeceased by all but one sister, Helene Beaumier and her husband, Pierre DuClos; and nephew, Simon Pierre of Quebec, Canada. She was also the aunt of Robin (Pare) Lagace of Wilmington, MA and Robert Pare of Bow, WA; and their extended family throughout Canada. She leaves many friends, former colleagues and neighbors both near and far.
Cathy received her diploma in Nursing from Saint Joseph Hospital, School of Nursing in Trois Riviers, Quebec, Canada in June of 1957 with “Great Distinction” and began her career as a nurse in Canada’s northwest territories and then the Montreal General Hospital, before moving to the United States. Cathy was an operating room nurse at Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital for over 40 years. She was, to quote a friend, “a very good nurse, and so kind to all the young nurses she trained to work in the OR.” After her retirement from nursing duties, she was involved in the running of that hospital’s gift shop for several years. Cathy enjoyed selecting items to be sold in the gift shop and she had excellent taste.
Cathy was a devoted wife to Jack, supporting his Northeastern University career as she pursued her nursing career. They had been married for almost 50 years at the time of Jack’s passing. They had Northeastern crew shells named for one or both of them and enjoyed many Head of the Charles regattas, as well as other events. Back in the day, Cathy and Jack also joined friends as tailgaters before Boston Patriots games. They would gather with many friends from the hospital as well as Northeastern University and they spent many such happy weekends together.
Travel was something that gave Cathy a lot of pleasure. She went on tours and cruises and took in the sights in many parts of Britain, Europe and the Mediterranean. She would go to New York with friends or one of her sisters to see a show or the Radio City Rockettes Christmas Show. Cathy was outgoing and made friends wherever she went. She and her husband, Jack, would spend several weeks on the Cape Cod during the summer, where she would soak in the sun and Jack would read. They would visit Nantucket or the Vineyard while summering on the Cape. They often had family and friends visit them there. Cathy enjoyed entertaining.
Cathy Grinold will be remembered for her kindness and generosity to others. She was good natured, supportive, funny and a warmhearted friend. Cathy will be greatly missed by those who knew her.
