Daniel J. Cummins entered into eternal rest surrounded by his loving wife Elaine and other family members on March 7, 2025. Dan was born 24th October 1935, Somerville, MA, to John and Mary Anastasia Cummins, the third of seven, first generation Irish American children. Dan graduated from Boston College High School in 1953 and Boston College with a degree in Economics in 1958 – a Double Eagle – and became a lifelong supporter of the university, devoting many volunteer hours to various programs, with the McMullen Museum being a cherished favorite.
He married the love of his life, Elaine (Stein-Cummins) in 1994 and experienced his happiest years with many overseas trips, a vacation retreat at Harwich Cape Cod, and visits with family members including the extended family in Ireland. Dan and Elaine were a devoted couple who lived in Newton, MA for many years. Upon graduation from Boston College, Dan was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and was proud to be promoted to Captain. He then transitioned to civilian life where he had a lifelong career in the commercial insurance industry. Dan became a standout salesman earning multiple awards and often becoming the top salesman in the New England region.
In 1995 Dan started his own company the ‘Cummins Insurance Agency’ providing top rate services to his clients for many years. Upon retirement Dan took up gardening, piano, investing and other hobbies while always devoting time to family activities. Dan will be remembered for his infectious smile, sparkling blue eyes, integrity, enjoyment of life, positive attitude, and love for others.
Dan is survived by his loving sons Brian (Patty) and Chris (Liz), stepson Daniel Primack, and eight grandchildren: Maureen, Deidre, Erin, Megan, Sean, Claire, Colin, and Emma; and four great grandchildren: Aoife, Finnegan, Conor and Cody. He often doted upon his family with arranging trips to DisneyWorld, treasuring time on the Cape, and ensuring they would have the finances for higher education. Dan is also survived by his sisters Pat (Ike) Norton and Eileen (Brian) Mulrenin and sister-in-law Susan Cummins.
Visiting Hours will be held on March 11th at Lehman, Reen, and McNamara at 63 Chestnut Hill Avenue, Brighton MA from 6-8pm. The funeral Mass will be held March 12 at 10:00 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 28 Commonwealth Ave, Chestnut Hill, MA. A private burial for the immediate family will follow.
Shiva will be observed at the residence on March 12 from 6 to 8 and on March 13 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either the McMullen Museum of Boston College, or to The Melanoma Center of Massachusetts General Hospital.
