Deirdre Grace (nee Gavin) Hager of Winchester and wife of the late Michael E. Hager passed away peacefully on April 25, 2023. Deirdre was born in Boston in 1942, the daughter of Patrick Gavin and Grayce Carney Gavin, and sister to Rev. Carney E.S. Gavin.
Growing up in Jamaica Plain, Deirdre graduated Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart in 1960 and Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart in 1964 with a B.A. in Classics. She received her M.A. degree with Pi Lambda Theta honors from Harvard University in 1965 in the same concentration. This progressed into her educational career serving as a Latin teacher. Deirdre earned M.A. degrees in Public Health and Social Work from Boston University in 1988 and a J.D. degree from Suffolk University Law School in 1991. She practiced patient advocacy law until 2012.
Deirdre was pre-deceased by her daughter Gabrielle, her son Andrew, her brother Carney, and her husband Michael. She is survived by her four children: Gavin Patrick, of West Newfield, Maine; Philip Augustine, of McLean, Virginia; Kristen Grayce of Breinigsville, Pennsylvania; Audrey-Maeve Barker of Montrose, Victoria, Australia; and two grandchildren, Mary Lou Hager and Hudson Barker.
Visiting Hours will be at Lehman, Reen & McNamara Funeral Home 63 Chestnut Hill Ave (nr Brighton Courthouse) Brighton, on Tuesday, May 2, from 4pm-7pm. A funeral mass is scheduled for Wednesday, May 3, at 10:30am at St. Columbkille Church 321 Market St, Brighton. She will join her husband’s resting place at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA on Thursday at 10:45am
