Gerald "Gerry" Harvey Obituary

Gerald T. “Gerry” Harvey of Marlborough, formerly of Brighton, passed away on August 21, 2024. Beloved husband of the late Virginia Marie (Lyons) Harvey.  Devoted father of Eileen Sviokla and her husband John, Michael Harvey and his wife Mary Frances all of Chicago, IL, Virginia Harvey and her late husband Thomas Davis of Marlborough, Suzanne Donabedian and her husband Daniel of Swansboro, NC, Gerald Harvey and his wife Maura of Falmouth, Carol Marchetti and her husband Peter of Reading, Kristen Feldman and her husband Judd of Delmar, CA.   Loving grandfather of John, Michael and his wife Nia, Patrick, Kathleen, and Kevin Sviokla, Carol Davis and her husband KJ Parent, Nicholas Davis, Jared Donabedian, Brianna Browning and her husband Clay, Jeremy Donabedian and his wife Grace, Patrick Harvey and his wife Erin, James Harvey, Jack Marchetti, Colin Feldman and the late Michael Marchetti.  Great grandfather of Virginia Sviokla, Cade Donabedian, and Brady Browning.  Dear brother of Sister Eileen Harvey, CSJ of Somerville and the late Francis Harvey.

Gerry graduated from St. Columbkille’s High School in 1951, and shortly thereafter, he joined the US Army and became a proud member of the 82nd Airborne Division as a paratrooper and jump instructor. Ginny and Gerry married at Our Lady of the Presentation Church in 1956. By 1964, they had six children, and by 1977, that number rose to seven. Gerry was an avid runner, who completed about 40 marathons (he lost count), finishing in 17th place in the 1963 Boston Marathon. He loved sharing his passion for baseball and running and coached many children and adults throughout his life. His coaching career began in the Oak Square Little League, where he led The Reds. Later, he coached The Streakers in 1972, which was one of the first girls’ softball teams in Brighton. When the Presentation CYO decided to form a Young Men’s Baseball League Gerry embraced the opportunity to be their Head Coach, and the team took the state championship. During his 50s and beyond, he coached many girls’ track & running teams at Mount Alvernia High School & Dana Hall School. Gerry also had a long career in the produce industry, first as a Buyer for the A&P, and then as a Produce Inspector for the US Dept of Agriculture.   Gerry was passionate about education and was so grateful to have the opportunity to enroll at Boston College when he was in his 40s, earning BA and MA degrees. His unique humor, passion for life, and ability to make others laugh will live on vividly in our memories.
