John Morgenstern Obituary

John C. (Hans) Morgenstern of Salem, NH. Passed peacefully on 1/2/2024 at the age of 91. Born in Vienna Austria in 1932 he came to the United States as a refugee in 1939. His family settled in Belcamp, MD, where he was raised. John went on to MIT and earned an EE degree for which he was very proud.

While at school he was a member of AEPI, and met the love of his life, Barbara. They married in 1954, and moved to Lexington, MA. There they raised a family of 3 boys Jeff, Dan, and Andrew.

John worked at Mitre Corporation for many years before being recruited to work at the Pentagon as an Undersecretary of Defense. He then opened a consulting company in the mid 80’s assisting private industry to win government contracts. After he retired he couldn’t stay still and he began a financial consultant career.

He was commissioner of the Gunstock Ski Area in Gilford, NH, where he and Barbara built their dream home on Lake Winnipesaukee. They resided there for more than 20 years and became part of the local fabric participating in town government and the development of the Winnipesaukee Playhouse in Meredith, NH.  A real lover of the Patriots (since 1960), spread sheets, sailing, skiing and golf, his life was full beyond most people’s dreams. His motto “Onward and Upward” will resonate with the family for years to come.

He is survived by his sons, Jeff (wife Bobby), of Wellesley, MA and Dan of Tempe, AZ, as well as his beloved brother Thomas (wife Judy) and his grandchildren Ariel, Chelsea, Anpao, Leah and Maxwell. As well as his partner Carole Levison. John was predeceased by his wife Barbara, son Andrew and grandson Stephen.

A service will be held Friday, January 5, 2024, 10 a.m. at Temple Beth Elohim, Wellesley, MA. Shiva, Friday 12-3 at the home of Jeff & Bobby.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Winnipesaukee Playhouse, Meredith, NH;  Temple Beth Elohim, Wellesley, MA or the charity of your choice.
