Maureen “Marnie” Cecilia Lufkin passed away peacefully at home on January 14, 2026. She was born on October 9, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois, to Paul John O’Connell and Mimi (Benz) O’Connell, the fourth of their six children. She grew up in Wilmette, Illinois, where she was known as a helpful, caring child who deeply loved her family and friends.
Marnie will be remembered for her warm smile, kind words, and gentle presence. She had a special gift for connecting with children and spent many years working in the special education department at Amesbury Middle School, where she cherished her colleagues and students.
A loyal and caring friend, Marnie was a beloved neighbor who always had a kind word to share. Her smile and thoughtfulness made a positive impact on the lives of those around her. For many years, Marnie lived in Amesbury, Massachusetts, where she shared countless adventures with friends on Lafayette Street. She was often found baking treats for friends and neighbors, lending a hand with projects, or volunteering her time to hold babies, bring in groceries, walk dogs, and listen with compassion. Being a good neighbor and a true friend were central to her beliefs and how she lived her life.
Marnie’s greatest joy was being a mother and grandmother. She loved simply spending time with her family, often on walks or bike rides. She strove to be a thoughtful listener and helper to each of her children, instilling in them a love of books, travel, and celebrating life. Her children will forever remember her devotion and the endless love she poured into them. They are deeply grateful for the love that shaped them and anchored their lives.
Known as “Marmee” to her grandchildren, Marnie found meaningful ways to connect with each of them based on their individual interests. Whether living nearby or far away, she always made time to be present in their lives. She delighted in reading, painting, building forts, baking, and playing with dinosaurs—often inspired by her grandchildren’s passions. Each grandchild knew they were deeply and unconditionally loved.
Marnie loved a good cup of tea, a mystery novel, and period television dramas. In the summer, she was often drawn to the ocean or any body of water, saying it calmed her soul.
Life presented Marnie with many challenges, but her deep faith provided guidance, comfort, and strength. This faith was reflected in the compassion and kindness she extended to others throughout her life.
In her final weeks, Marnie reminded her children and grandchildren that the greatest gift in life is love, and that even the smallest act of kindness can make a meaningful difference.
She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Jon Paul Lufkin.
Marnie is survived by her five children and ten grandchildren: Casey Talbot (Jill) of Greenwich, CT; Heather Lufkin (JP Tapley) of Sudbury, MA; Heidi Carroll (Chris) of Danville, NH; Matthew Lufkin (Hilary) of Denver, CO; and Mia Lufkin of San Diego, CA. She leaves behind ten adored grandchildren—Macilin, Lilah, and Ellery Talbot; Charlie, Clare, and Abigail Tapley; Henry and Haley Carroll; and Cooper and Sloane Lufkin—each of whom brought her immense joy. She is also survived by her sister, Debbie McLaughlin; her brother, Paul O’Connell; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A graveside burial and celebration of life will be held in Amesbury, Massachusetts, in early August.
