Of Watertown, MA, passed away suddenly on April 24, 2022. Beloved son of the late Raymond V. and Barbara A. (Aucoin) Mellone. Devoted brother of Susan B. Gincauskis of Cape Cod and Caroline Mellone and her husband Allan McPherson of NH. Doting uncle of Ashley Franklin and her husband Ryan, and Danielle Gincauskis. Loving Fiancé of Wai Kuin of Singapore.
Michael will be remembered for his many interests and accomplishments, too many to count. There were not many topics on which Mike did not have some level of knowledge or expertise. From cooking to music, soccer to cycling, mechanics and physics, languages, computers, medical research, photography and more, Mike had proficiency in it all.
Michael received many awards and honors during his life; primary school art and science awards, regional high-school science awards, was a Cub Scout through Eagle Scout rank, the highest level attainable and a member of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s national camping honor society. During his teens his interest in science and computers came into focus. A graduate of the Boston Latin School, Mike went on to Boston University for his undergraduate and Masters Degrees. He used his work and university experiences to become a subject matter expert and principal developer in software and hardware machine vision designs for several companies.
His work experiences helped fuel his curiosity and love of Asian cultures, foods and languages. He learned to speak several languages which he used in his travels to Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Singapore and his second home, Malaysia.
Throughout his life 2 constants stand out; love of books and cycling. He was a fixture in many of the Boston Public Libraries, most notably in the last 15 years, the Honan-Allston branch. He spent many hours there selecting his own reading and research materials and also picking up and returning the murder mystery books his mother loved. He also was a friend to the Friends of the Library, purchasing and donating books for their fund-raising sales.
A cyclist from his early teens, Mike embraced the sport. He loved the challenge of the long distance ride, going 50 plus miles at times. He organized group rides and encouraged novices in the sport. He even had a part –time gig at International Bike. To aid cancer research, Mike participated in the Pan Mass Challenge. For many years he rode and later when he was unable to ride due to his own health issues, he donated his time to assist with bike repairs during the 2-day event.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, June 16 in St. Anthony Church, 43 Holton St., Allston at 11 AM. Followed by a Celebration of Life at the Marriott, Residence Inn, East End Room, 570 Arsenal St., Watertown. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Interment Private.
