Rosenia Christiansen Obituary

Rosenia Barayuga Christiansen of Boston, 83, passed away on February 12, 2024, after suffering a major stroke.

Rose will always be remembered as an incredible teacher, math coach and mentor and a caring mother-figure to many.  Born in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte in the Philippines, Rose attended college in Davao and began her teaching career there.  After meeting her husband, Per, in Davao, they moved to teach in Boston and in Kenya before settling permanently in Boston.

Rose attended graduate school at Boston University and then taught elementary school in Brookline for 30 years, where she often mentored graduate student teachers in her classroom as well.  On weekends, she volunteered her time teaching at Iskwelahang Pilipino (IP), a Filipino cultural school, around which her local Filipino community was established.  During her school vacations and other free time, she continually attended professional development courses and became a math coach and TERC Investigations curriculum trainer.  In 1995, Rose was recognized as part of the Walt Disney Company and McDonald’s American Teacher Awards ceremony, and in 2002, she received a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching from the White House.

Rose loved to cook and to travel, and enjoyed both sharing her native Filipino dishes with others, and learning how to cook cuisines from other cultures.  She showed her love through her cooking, and took great joy in hosting gatherings of family and close friends.

After Per worked at a refugee camp in Thailand in the early 1980s, Rose and Per began helping Per’s Thai co-workers to come to Boston for graduate studies.  They opened their home, hearts, and family to welcome students and young professionals from Southeast Asia to the Boston area over several decades, building lasting bonds that Rose cherished greatly.

A pillar of her family, Rose leaves behind Per, her husband of 58 years; their daughter Elsa Janairo and son-in-law Raymond, grandchildren Rialto, Evangelise, Emi and Roderick; siblings Arnulfo and Ruben (she was predeceased by Pedro and Aurora), and sisters-in-law Catalina Barayuga, Dolores Barayuga and Josephine Barayuga and their families, the family of her deceased sister Aurora, her aunt Marcelina Barayuga, and many beloved cousins and their families.

A memorial service celebrating Rose’s life will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at 10am at Mount Hope Christian Center, 3 McGinnis Drive, Burlington, MA 01803.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in her honor may be mailed to Iskwelahang Pilipino (IP) at 12 Mudge Way, Bedford, MA 01730 or through this link: https://home.ipbahay.org/rose-christiansen/ .  Messages for her family may be sent through her email address: Rosemath@gmail.com
